Asia Cup to be staged in hybrid model from August 31 to Sept 17

NEW DELHI: The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) on Thursday put an end to months of rumours surrounding the Asia Cup by announcing that the competition will be held in a hybrid model, with four games in Pakistan and nine in Sri Lanka, from August 31 to September 17.

The BCCI made it plain that it would not send a team to Pakistan because of the ongoing geopolitical tensions between the two nations, which is why the hybrid concept was put up.We are excited to announce that the finest teams from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Nepal will participate in a total of 13 thrilling one-day international matches during the Asia Cup 2023, which will take place from August 31 to September 17, 2023.

The ACC announced in a statement that "the tournament will be hosted in a hybrid model, with four matches being held in Pakistan and the remaining nine matches being played in Sri Lanka." Two groups will be present in the 2023 edition, and two teams from each group will advance to the Super Four stage. The final will then feature the top two teams from the Super Four stage.Pakistani matches will take place in Lahore, while Sri Lankan matches will be played in Kandy and Pallekele.

The Asia Cup schedule's acceptance also confirms Pakistan's participation in the ODI World Cup in India in October-November. On October 15, the bitter rivals are anticipated to square off at the largest cricket stadium in the globe in Ahmedabad. It is believed that after visiting Karachi to meet with PCB Chairman Najam Sethi and ICC CEO Geoff Allardice last month, it was decided that Pakistan would not set any requirements for playing in the World Cup, provided four Asia Cup matches were held in the nation since they hold the hosting rights.Due to two guaranteed India-Pakistan games and the potential for a third, should the two sides advance to the final, playing the tournament without Pakistan would have resulted in the broadcasters only contributing half of the funds committed for the event.
