Deben Dutta lynching case: Court awards death sentence to one convict, life imprisonment to 24 others

A local court in Jorhat, has awarded one Sanjay Rajowar, prime accused in the Dr Deben Dutta lynching case, with a death sentence. The court has also sent 24 other convicts in the case to life imprisonment.  A Jorhat court has awarded death sentence to a tea garden worker and life imprisonment to 24  others for the lynching of the Teok Tea estate doctor Deben Dutta. The district and sessions court on October 13 Jorhat Judge Robin Phukan convicted 25 tea workers under Sections 302/149, 342/149, 353/148, 353/149, of IPC. The court awarded death sentence to convict Sanjay Rajowar, who was the prime accused in the case. Sanjib Rajowar, Suresh Rajowar, Ajoy Majhi, Upendra Bhumij, Ratul Rajowar, Bablu Rajowar,  Anil Majhi, Bijoy Rajowar, Bolin Rajowar, Dipak Rajowar, Milon Rajowar, Rinku Majhi, Mishilal Majhi, Sibcharan Mahali, Debeswar Rajowar, Kartik Bhumiz, Sanjoy Rajowar, Kalicharan Mahali,  Rameswar Bhumiz, Siba Mahali, Rahul Rajowar, Kalanag Majhi, Manoj Majhi, Rinku Bakti and the 24 covitcts who awared with life imprisoment.

Police arrested 32 tea garden workers for the lynching of Dutta and filed a chargesheet against them to the chief judicial magistrate of Jorhat on September 24 last year. A section of workers of Teok Tea estate attacked 73-year-old Dutta, following the death of a worker, Somra Majhi.
