Assam Police seize drugs worth Rs 30 cr, three arrested

GUWAHATI: Assam Police have seized Contraband drugs worth Rs 30 crores and three smugglers have been arrested in connection to the seizure in Assam’s Karimganj district.

As per police's statement, the huge cache of drugs was seized on March 26 night when a vehicle coming from Mizoram and moving towards Tripura was apprehended. More than 3 kilo of narcotic substances were recovered.

"Looking into the earlier cases and preliminary investigation into the current case, drugs were tried to smuggle to Bangladesh." The driver, Shafik Miya, and helper, Ramnath Goala, were arrested by the police, said Partha Pratim Das, Superintendent of Police, Karimganj District.

In another seizure in Karimganj, contraband drugs worth Rs 20 crores were seized and two peddlers were arrested in December last year.

As per specific inputs, the Karimganj Police carried out a search operation and stopped a car in the Bazaricherra neighbourhood with the licence plate AR-01D-5996. Upon being stopped, three to four hidden rooms were discovered in the car, along with 131 soap cases containing 2.01 kg of heroin and 50,000 Yaba tablets. Kabir Ahmed and Gopendra Das, two narcotics traffickers, were detained.

"We learned via a confidential tip that drugs were being carried in a car. When we stopped it, we found that the oil tanker had been split into two pieces. From the car, authorities found at least 220 soap containers with yaba tablets and 2.9kg of heroin "Das said.
