Austrians who have not been vaccinated will be placed under lockdown

Vienna: Unvaccinated people in Austria will be kept under lockdown beginning Monday in order to prevent the spread of Covid-19, the authorities announced. "We have chosen to take this hard step with a heavy heart," Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg said at a cabinet meeting on Sunday, the  media reported.

Unvaccinated individuals over the age of 12 will be barred from leaving their homes save for basic tasks like as working, shopping, or exercising, said Schallenberg, while those under the age of 12 will be unaffected. The 10-day lockdown is likely to affect 2 million Austrians out of a population of 8.9 million, and police have been urged to check persons outside to ensure they are vaccinated against the virus, according to Schallenberg. "Now we must do everything possible to increase the alarmingly low immunisation rate. With the current vaccination rate, we will never be able to break free from the vicious cycle "According to Schallenberg.

Currently, 65 percent of Austrian individuals are fully vaccinated, making it one of the lowest vaccination rates in Western Europe. On Sunday, Austria recorded 11,552 new Covid-19 infections, down from a daily high of 13,152 the day before. With the latest instances, the total number of infections in the country has risen to 959,652.
