Rampur: After the conviction of Azam Khan in the hate speech case, the by-election is to be held on the Rampur assembly seat. After BJP, now Samajwadi Party has also declared its candidate for this seat. The Samajwadi Party has made Asim Raza, a close aide of Azam Khan, its candidate for the Rampur assembly by-election. After the meeting on Tuesday, Azam Khan announced the name of Asim Raza. Earlier, Asim Raza also contested the Lok Sabha by-election from Rampur. Azam Khan had won the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from Rampur. Thereafter, Azam contested the assembly elections from this seat and won. Azam resigned from the membership of the Lok Sabha after becoming an MLA. By-elections were held on the Rampur Lok Sabha seat in June 2022. The Samajwadi Party nominated Asim Raza, while the BJP fielded Ghanshyam Lodhi against Asim. After a tough fight, Ghanshyam Lodhi defeated Asim Raza by 42,048 votes. Azam Khan had made objectionable and provocative comments during an election speech in Rampur's Milak assembly due to the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The complaint was made by BJP leader Akash Saxena. In this case, the MP-MLA court of Rampur, while giving its verdict on October 27, declared Azam Khan a criminal and sentenced him to 3 years. Thereafter, the membership of Azam Khan was cancelled. Akash Saxena, who opened a front against Azam Khan in Rampur, has been re-nominated by the party. Akash Saxena's name also came into the news because of Azam Khan. Actually, the role of this local BJP leader is important in getting Azam Khan punished in the case of hate speech. This is the reason why BJP has given a ticket to Akash Saxena from Rampur, which is considered to be the bastion of the Samajwadi Party and Azam Khan, despite not having any major position in the organization.
