Bangladesh's ruling party proposes a new law be enacted to create the EC

DHAKA; Bangladesh's ruling party, the Awami League (AL), has called for taking the necessary steps to ensure that voters at all levels, including minorities, can vote freely in elections.

On Monday, the party leaders recommended implementing a new law reorganising the Election Commission (EC). They also supported for the strengthening of the EC and the use of technologies such as electronic voting machines (EVMs) in elections to ensure that they are free, fair, and credible. The idea was presented during President M. Abdul Hamid's discussion of the EC reconstitution with political parties in Bangabhaban.

Sheikh Hasina, the Prime Minister and President of the ruling party, led a 10-member AL team to the talks. "Because there is no explicit statute, the President is not bound by any other regulation than the Constitution when appointing the CEC and other EC members under Article 118. However, in order to respect the spirit of the Constitution, a statute defining an individual's eligibility and disqualifications while serving as the CEC and commissioners must be enacted "the proposal stated

According to one of the four ideas presented to the President by AL, a new law may be adopted to appoint the chief election commissioner (CEC) and other commissioners in compliance with Article 118 of the Constitution.
