Battle in three directions for the next president of Sri Lanka

COLOMBO: A three-pronged battle is set to take place for the selection of the next Sri Lankan President by approval of Parliament.  Parliament will conduct a secret vote to choose the new President on July 20. Wickremesinghe will run for the position to complete the current presidential term,  While Alahapperuma is supported by the 10-party alliance and one SLPP group, the other is planning to support him.

The Samagi Jana Balawegaya had previously declared Sajith Premadasa as their presidential candidate, as per Daily Mirror. The winner of the election will be the candidate who receives more than 50% of the legitimate votes. The MPs' marked preferential votes will be taken into account unless one of the candidates receives more than 50% of the vote.

The Janatha Vimukthi Peramun (JVP), has adopted the stance that the next President should be selected from among neutral MPs who have no plans to run for office in the future, as per reports.. According to the party, Mahinda Yapa Abeywardane should be chosen as Speaker of Parliament. The JVP is of the opinion that the selection of a politician with presidential aspirations will advance the objectives of his party in light of the next election.
