The Indian Institutes of Management Bill, 2017, was cleared on Tuesday by the Cabinet. This bill will give the prestigious Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) complete authority to carry on their affairs on their own and award degrees to their graduates. Insights of the Bill The Bill gives power to the !5-member board of each IIM on running the institute, headed by a chairperson who will be an eminent person from the field of education industry science or technology . Each board will have a representative of the HRD ministry , one of the state government, four eminent persons, four alumni, one member of the IIM society, two faculty members and a director who will be ex-officio member. One of the member should be from SC, ST or OBC community. The power will be taken away from the government regarding taking decisions for these business schools Once the bill is passed by the parliament IIM will come to be known as ‘institution of national importance’ The bill has no provision of reservation in faculty jobs except stating that the recruitment policy should be inclusive. There is no change regarding the reservation of SC, ST and OBC for the admission The bill was cleared by the Cabinet in the absence of HRD minister Prakash Javadekar. It was cleared after months of putting effort and running between the between the HRD ministry and the Prime Minister's Office. Javadekar was in Pune to attend his son’s marriage and had taken the permission of PM Narendra Modi on a telephonic conversation.
