The team of researcher Gauhati University has a got huge sucess as a new biological pesticide by from has been patented. The Patent Office, Government of India granted on September 21 . The pros of new pesticide is that it is a low-cost bio-formulation created with an indigenous fungal bio-agent. The team of researchers who develop the pesticides includes Novonita Baruah, Alak Chandra Deka, Mohan Chandra Kalita and Jogen Chandra Kalita. They developed the biological pesticide to control red spider mites that attack tea bushes and cause heavy crop loss every year. Over a thousand species of arthropod pests attacks tea crops. Of this, about 300 species of such insects are found in India, and 167 species are from the Northeast alone. This pests wreaks havie and altogether they cause 11 to 55 per cent loss in yield in India every year. The pests which affects mainly to tea pant are mosquito bug, the red spider mite, pink mites, the red slug caterpillar, the looper, the green leaf hopper and many more. Among these, the red spider mite (oligonychus coffeae) posses most damage to tea-growing regions of the Northeast. A large number of chemical pesticides (insecticides and acaricides) are used for controlling them. Nymphs and the adults of the mite species are able to cause heavy crop loss.
