NEW DELHI: In a solemn ceremony at the Shree Muktinath Temple in Nepal, a bell was placed in honour of India's late Chief of Defense Chief, General Bipin Rawat. The bell, known as "Bipin Bell," was placed as a memorial to the late CDS, who frequently expressed a strong desire to visit the temple. Hindus attach tremendous value to the temple because it is a Vishnu temple and one of the Shakti Peeth, and the bell's placement pays honour to Gen. Rawat. Many dignitaries have visited the Shree Muktinath Temple, including the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who did so in 2018. Four former Indian army commanders who are also Honorary Generals of the Nepali Army, Gens. VN Sharma, JJ Singh, Deepak Kapoor, and Dalbir Suhag, visited for the installation of the bell. They are in the country to take part in the 260th Nepali Army Day festivities, when the Indian Army band from the 11 Gorkha Rifles gave their debut performance. In acknowledgment of their mutually cordial cooperation and the long-standing friendship between India and Nepal, both nations periodically confer the honorary rank of General upon their respective Army Chiefs. In addition to paying homage to General Bipin Rawat, the "Bipin Bell" also serves as a symbol of the close connections between the Indian and Nepalese militaries, which frequently exchange soldiers and participate in joint military drills such the "Indo-Nepal Battalion-level Joint Military Exercise SURYA KIRAN." The Nepal Army Battle School, Saljhandi (Nepal), hosted the 16th iteration of the Indo-Nepal joint training exercise "SURYA KIRAN-XVI" between India and Nepal from December 16–29, 2022. Exercise “SURYA KIRAN” is conducted annually between India and Nepal with the aim to enhance interoperability in jungle warfare and counter-terrorism operations in mountainous terrain and HADR under UN mandate.
