BJP in Karnataka all set for cabinet formation

BENGALURU: The ruling BJP party in Karnataka is planning a cabinet reshuffle in the wake of a series of events that threaten the state's law and order situation.

Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai is expected to receive final instructions from the high command when he arrives in New Delhi on Tuesday. Aspirants for cabinet positions from the state have also arrived in Washington, D.C., to garner support for a spot in the cabinet.

According to BJP sources, the party is considering filling four vacant cabinet positions as well as removing more than five cabinet ministers to make room for new faces and to position the ruling party for the upcoming Assembly elections in 2023.

Though the main topic of discussion during Bommai's meeting is winning approval for the Mekedatu project, getting approval for a cabinet reshuffle or expansion is also vital. According to party sources, the party is considering removing more than five current ministers to create room for more than ten new faces.

B.Y. Vijayendra, the son of previous Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa, will be given a cabinet post. The party would have to make a decision on the matter because the backing of BJP strongman B.S. Yediyurappa is critical in the approaching elections. The move of the party in this regard has sparked a lot of interest, especially as investigations into Yediyurappa's land denotification were recently revived.
