CHENNAI: The investigation into the death of IIT-Madras student Fathima Latheef by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has found that she committed suicide. The agency also ruled out the potential of mental harassment in its findings. The girl had certain psychiatric disorders, according to the agency's final report, and she took the extreme measure due to homesickness. Fathima Latheef, a Kollam native, enrolled in the humanities programme at IIT-Madras in July 2019. On November 9, 2019, she was found hanging in room 349 of Sarayu hostel on campus.After her family said she was pushed to suicide, the Tamil Nadu police formed a special investigative team to look into her death. S. Easwaramoorthy, the Additional Commissioner of Police for Tamil Nadu, indicated in his report in 2019 that Fathima committed suicide because she was homesick and suffering from psychiatric disorders, which the CBI has now confirmed. Her father, Latheef, discovered a suicide note in her phone and said that she had been exposed to mental torment and harassment, which drove her to take such drastic measures.
