Central government seeks report on violence in JNU on Ram Navami, two groups of students were beaten up

New Delhi: The Union Ministry of Education (MoE) has sought a report from the JNU administration on the clash and unrest between a group of students on the occasion of Ram Navami on the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus. In fact, in JNU's Cauvery Hostel, two groups of students clashed over allegedly serving non-vegetarian food on the day of Ram Navami. Several students were injured in the incident.

A senior MoE official has said that as per standard procedures, a formal report has been sought regarding clashes between student groups and unrest on the campus on the occasion of Ram Navami. Two groups of students clashed at the Cauvery hostel on Sunday over allegedly serving non-vegetarian food on Ram Navami in the mess, police said, adding that 20 students were injured in the violence. The two student groups filed police complaints against each other on Monday, while university officials claimed that the violence took place after some students objected to the havan. The JNU administration has also warned students of disciplinary action if they are found involved in any kind of violence on campus.

The Left-backed JNU students' union and the RSS-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) have accused each other of violence. The Left has claimed that 50 of its members were injured, while the ABVP said 10-12 of its workers were injured. Hundreds of JNU students belonging to the Left-wing All India Students' Union (AISA) staged a protest near the Delhi Police headquarters on Monday, demanding the arrest of ABVP members for their alleged role in the violence at the university.
