NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said the Central government along with state governments are making efforts to control Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) in cattle. many states are grappling with Lumpy Skin Disease in cattle and the disease has emerged as a concern for the dairy sector. During his speech to the International Dairy Federation World Dairy Summit (IDF WDS) 2022, which is being held at the India Expo Centre & Mart here, Modi mentioned that his scientists have also created an indigenous vaccine for lumpy skin disease. He said, the disease has recently caused livestock losses in numerous Indian states. Yogi Adityanath, the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, and Parshottam Rupala, the minister of fisheries, animal husbandry, and dairying, both attended the opening ceremony. Sanjeev Balyan, a minister of state for agriculture, animal husbandry, and dairying, was also present. LSD, also known as lumpy skin disease, is a contagious viral illness that infects cattle and can cause nodules on the skin, fever, and even death. By way of contaminated food and water, as well as by direct contact between cattle, mosquitoes, flies, lice, and wasps, the disease is disseminated. The state Animal Husbandry Department is preparing to establish a 300-km-long "immune belt," stretching from Pilibhit to Etawah, to control the further spread of the viral disease in other parts of the state as lumpy skin disease (LSD) affects cattle and is spreading quickly in West Uttar Pradesh with as many as 21,619 cases and 199 deaths reported from 2,331 villages. As per data held by the Animal Husbandry Department, the virus has affected 23 districts, with Aligarh, Muzaffarnagar, and Saharanpur reporting the highest number of cases. Other west UP districts including Mathura, Bulandshahr, Baghpat, Hapur, Meerut, Shamli, and Bijnor have also recorded cases.
