China confirms first case of new coronavirus variant detected in UK

New Delhi: China, the epicentre of coronavirus has confirmed its first case of a new coronavirus variant that was recently detected in Britain.

In a research note published Wednesday, The Chinese Centre for Disease Control said, A 23-year-old woman from Shanghai who arrived from Britain on December 14 tested positive for the new corona strain. She was hospitalised on arrival as she showed mild symptoms. 

The new variant is known as B.1.1.7 that has been spreading in the UK since October. China had suspended direct flights to and from Britain indefinitely on December 24 because of the new strain. The new strain of coronavirus is wreaking havoc in European countries. The  United Kingdom reported over 50,000 corona cases in a span of 24 hours for the second consecutive day, pushing the total number of infections to over 24 lakh on Wednesday. The UK also recorded 981 deaths in a day due to new corona strain, taking the fatality toll since the pandemic began to 72,548. Earlier, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that the fast-moving new variant of the virus that is 70 per cent more transmissible than existing strain.
