The state planner on Friday has made an announcement that China is to start construction of 10,000 kilometres (6,213.7 miles) of intercity and urban railway over the next five years in Yangtze River Delta, Greater Bay and Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei areas. The Greater Bay area is a region that includes Hong Kong, Macau and nine cities in China’s southern Guangdong province. Chinese railway network is the second largest network in the world. China is planning to expand its railway network, by one-third in the next decade and a half, as part of a long-term plan to revolutionise the urbanisation and stimulate local economies. BY the end of 2035, China aims to have about 200,000 kilometres of railway tracks, including about 70,000 km of high-speed railway, as per the plan issued by state-owned China State Railway Group in August.
