KATHMANDU: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will arrive in Kathmandu on Friday after ending his trip to New Delhi, where he will conduct delegation-level meetings with his Nepalese counterpart Narayan Khadka. Wang and Khadka will meet on Saturday, according to the Kathmandu Ministry of Foreign Affairs, following which the two sides are anticipated to sign certain agreements. Wang will meet with President Bidhya Devi Bhandari, Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, opposition leader KP Sharma Oli, and NCP (Maoist Centre) Chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal during his three-day visit. China is expected to expand its annual grants to Nepal, according to media sources, and will finance and invest in infrastructure, cross-border connectivity, health, education, trade, commerce, and other initiatives. The two countries will emphasise the implementation of previous agreements and accords struck during Chinese President Xi Jinping's 2019 visit to Nepal and former Nepal Prime Minister Oli's 2018 visit to Beijing. Since Deuba took office as Prime Minister in July last year, Wang will be the first high-ranking Chinese official to visit Nepal. Wang is in Kathmandu following the ratification of the Millennium Challenge Corporation Nepal Compact, which Beijing has criticised. The visit is also seen as a fresh effort by Beijing to push projects under the Chinese Belt and Road Initiative, which Nepal joined in May 2017, four months before signing the MCC accord, which includes a USD 500 million American contribution.
