Coal scam: ED summons Malay Ghatak, law minister of Mamta government, will be questioned on June 19

Kolkata: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has summoned West Bengal Law Minister Malay Ghatak for questioning on June 19 after summoning West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee's daughter-in-law Rujira Banerjee in connection with a coal scam case. According to ED sources, the Delhi High Court had asked the ED to send summons to Malay Ghatak at least 15 days before her questioning.

The ED on Thursday issued summons to Rujira Narula Banerjee, wife of TMC MP and Mamata's nephew Abhishek Banerjee, in connection with the coal smuggling case. ED sources said Rujira has been summoned to the investigating agency's Kolkata office for questioning at 11 am next Thursday. The investigators had sent a mail to the foreign law minister seeking time only after receiving the court order, but ED sources claim that Malay Ghatak did not respond to their mails. Then the agency sent a mail from the Mamata government to the Law Minister for the third time. In that mail, Malay Ghatak had consented to the ED for questioning at that time (June 19).

According to sources, Malay Ghatak has been summoned to the ED headquarters in Delhi on June 19. She has been asked to appear in person. Earlier, the Delhi High Court had ordered that Malay Ghatak be summoned in time. Justice Dinesh Kumar Sharma of the Delhi High Court said that after hearing the statements of both the parties in the case, the ED will issue a notice to Malay Ghatak for questioning in Delhi. However, the summons should be sent 15 days before the date of submission. The investigating agency will not take any coercive action in case of non-response to the summons sent earlier. Malay Ghatak's lawyers had argued that he was too busy as he was the law minister of the Malay Ghatak state.
