Communist Party Veteran Shyamal Chakraborty dies of Corona

Kolkata: Shyamal Chakraborty, a veteran leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM) and trade union leader, has died due to the coronavirus. Chakraborty was 78 years old and said goodbye to the world on Thursday afternoon at 1.45 am. Chakraborty was admitted to a private hospital in Kolkata after being found corona positive where he was put on a ventilator.

Shyamal Chakraborty was also a cabinet minister in the previous Jyoti Basu government of West Bengal. On Wednesday, CM and Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee called his daughter and actress Usashi Chakraborty to take stock of Shyamal Chakraborty's health. Chakraborty, a three-time West Bengal transport minister from 1982 to 1996, was admitted to the hospital on July 30 after being found coronavirus positive. He was also a two-time Rajya Sabha member and a trade union leader.

A party leader said that he died this afternoon. He was on ventilator for the last few days. Chakraborty is survived by his daughter Ushasi Chakraborty, who is an actress. Chakraborty is the second major leader in West Bengal to lose his life due to Corona. Earlier TMC MLA Tamonash Ghosh died in June of this infection. On Wednesday, Vidhannagar Municipal Corporation councilor Subhash Bose also died due to corona.
