New Delhi: Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi has sought a three-week extension to appear before the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Their demand has been accepted by the ED and now the agency will issue a fresh summons to interrogate them. The ED summoned Sonia Gandhi for questioning on June 8. The ED had issued summons to Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in the National Herald case. Sonia Gandhi was to appear before the agency on June 8 and Rahul Gandhi was to appear before it on June 13. Congress leader and lawyer by profession Abhishek Manu Singhvi had said that Sonia Gandhi will join the interrogation on June 8 and if Rahul comes back from abroad, he will also join, otherwise more time will be sought from the investigating agency. According to experts, if Sonia and Rahul do not want to appear before the ED, then there are two options before them. First, they can leave without replying to the notice. In this case, the ED will send them a notice again. The other option is to challenge this notice before the court. In the press conference, Randeep Surjewala had surrounded the ED and called it the PM's pet agency. Surjewala had said that the Modi government has become blind in the spirit of revenge. He had termed the ED's notice as a new cowardly act. Surjewala said the National Herald was a 1942 newspaper. The British government worked to suppress it. Now the Modi government is doing the same thing by using ED. What is the National Herald case? BJP Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy had made serious allegations against Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, late leader Motilal Vora, journalist Suman Dubey and technocrat Sam Pitroda in the National Herald case. He alleged that it was wrongfully acquired through Young India Limited and Congress leaders grabbed assets worth up to Rs 2,000 crore. The investigation of this case was started by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in 2014. Congress has been saying regarding this matter that the purpose of Young India Limited is not to earn profit but it has been formed for charity.
