New Delhi: In a significant shift of stance, the Congress party extended its support for the Palestinian cause on Monday, following a previous statement in which it had condemned "brutal attacks on the people of Israel" by the Palestinian Terrorist group, Hamas. During a Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting, a resolution was passed expressing anguish over the ongoing conflict in the region and calling for an immediate ceasefire. The resolution reaffirmed the party's commitment to the rights of the Palestinian people. The conflict, which has been raging since Saturday, has resulted in the loss of around 1,200 lives, with both Hamas and Israeli defense forces engaged in intense fighting. In an official statement, the Congress party stressed the importance of pursuing a peaceful resolution through dialogue and negotiations to address the longstanding conflict between Israel and Palestine. "The Indian National Congress has always believed that the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people, seeking a life of self-respect, equality, and dignity, must be fulfilled through a process of dialogue and negotiations. At the same time, the party emphasizes the importance of safeguarding the legitimate national security interests of the Israeli people. Violence of any kind is never a solution and must come to an immediate halt," read a statement posted by Congress on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. The situation in Israel escalated dramatically when the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) declared that they had regained control of southern areas near the Gaza Strip. This came after three days of intense battles aimed at dislodging holdout Hamas fighters. The surprise attack by Hamas had shocked the nation, with some likening it to the traumatic events of 9/11. The Congress party's evolving position on the Israel-Palestine conflict underscores the complexities and sensitivities involved in addressing this longstanding issue. While expressing support for the Palestinian people's rights, the party is also mindful of the security concerns of the Israeli population and calls for a peaceful resolution through dialogue.
