New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) today announced the schedule of the upcoming assembly elections in five states – Mizoram, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Telangana on Monday, October 8, 2023. According to reports, the election panel had organized a press conference at 12 noon today to announce the polling dates, the number of phases, and the dates for filing and withdrawal of nominations.

According to the Election Commission, voting will be held in a single phase in Madhya Pradesh on November 17, while in Chhattisgarh, voting will be held on November 7 and 17.
Voting will be held in Rajasthan on November 23 and in Telangana on November 30. In the northeastern state Mizoram, elections will be held in a single phase on November 7. The counting of votes for the assembly elections of all states will take place on December 3, and the results will be released on the same day.
The tenure of the Legislative Assemblies in these five states is going to end between December 2023 and January 2024. The ECI usually announces the election schedule six to eight weeks before the end of the term of the Legislative Assembly.

The upcoming assembly elections will be a major test for all major political parties, including the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the main opposition Congress, and regional parties. Congress is in power in two of the five states - Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, while BJP is the ruling party in Madhya Pradesh. The KCR-led Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) is in power in Telangana, and the Mizo National Front (MNF) is in power in Mizoram.
