Congress Working Committee's Focus on Caste Census and Poll Strategy for Upcoming Elections
The Congress Working Committee (CWC) convened a pivotal session on Monday, October 9, focusing its attention on two critical aspects: strategizing for the impending assembly elections and advocating for a comprehensive nationwide caste census.
As the CWC convened, anticipation mounted, especially considering that the Election Commission was slated to unveil the election dates for Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, and Mizoram on the same day. The gathering included prominent figures within the party hierarchy, such as Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, former leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, along with chief ministers from Congress-governed states and other influential leaders. Their discussions revolved around fine-tuning election strategies and crafting compelling narratives tailored to the unique dynamics of each of the states bracing for elections.
One of the standout agenda items was the Congress Party's unwavering commitment to advocating for a comprehensive caste census on a national scale. The implications of such a census were deemed a matter of significant concern and deliberation during the meeting.
However, it is worth noting that within the Congress ranks, there exist certain reservations regarding how to articulate this demand effectively. Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently raised objections, accusing the opposition party of attempting to create divisions among the Hindu community, particularly through its emphasis on the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category.
In the electoral arena, the Congress Party has set its sights on maintaining its governance in Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan, while simultaneously striving to wrest power from the BJP in Madhya Pradesh, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) in Telangana, and the Mizo National Front (MNF) in Mizoram.
The CWC meeting serves as a pivotal moment in the party's preparations for the upcoming elections, where the twin objectives of refining electoral strategies and championing the cause of a nationwide caste census have taken center stage.
