Shiv Sena rewards Congress MLA seeking pardon for terrorist Yakub Memon

Mumbai: A day after Congress MLA Aslam Sheikh was inducted into the Maharashtra cabinet, an old letter of pardon to Yakub Memon, convicted of the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts, has gone viral on social media. Sheikh has blamed the BJP for this, alleging that since the saffron party failed to retain power in the state, it is confusing people on various issues.

Sheikh was one of the leaders of Maharashtra who in 2015 sought pardon for terrorist Yakub Memon. The Shiv Sena, which was then in the BJP-led coalition, was in favor of capital punishment for Memon. The Thackeray-led party joined hands with traditional allies of Congress and NCP last month. Speaking to presspersons on Tuesday after his old letter went viral on social media, Sheikh (who is MLA from Malad seat in Mumbai) said, "Ever since the BJP has been dethroned, it has sent people on various issues and confusing them.'

Sheikh said, 'Those who built the temple of Nathuram Godse are blaming me. These are the same people who killed Mahatma Gandhi. They are trying to do what even the British could not do. ' In July 2015, Sheikh sent a letter to the then President Pranab Mukherjee seeking clemency for Memon. However, his mercy petition was dismissed and Memon was hanged in Nagpur jail on 30 July 2015.
