Convicted pastor gets punishment for sexual abuse of 16-year-old girl

Kochi: In this case, following the policy of 'zero tolerance' towards clergy who sexually abuse a minor, Pope Francis has expelled the Kerala clergyman guilty of misdeeds. According to church officials, the pastor has been removed from all prayer duties and rights. Robin Vadakkamcherry, a priest of Siro-Malabar Church, is currently serving a sentence in jail for raping a 16-year-old girl in Mananthawadi.

A church official said Robin has been removed from the duties and rights of worship. At the same time, he was suspended from the duties of the clergy soon after the news of his crime came to light in early 2017. Last year, a POCSO court in Thalassery sentenced Robin to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment and fined him three lakh rupees.

The 50-year-old clergyman was the pastor of the local church at Kottiyur in Kannur district and was the manager of the school where the victim was studying. He was arrested two years ago amid attempts to flee to Canada. At the same time, Pope Francis made it clear two years later that all bishops should follow a policy of "zero tolerance" towards pastors who sexually abuse children. After this, the Vatican has taken this action.
