Corruption case in defense deal, 3 convicted including former Samata Party president Jaya Jaitley

New Delhi: In a 20-year-old case of corruption in defense deal, former national president of Samata Party Jaya Jaitley and two others have been convicted by the court. A news portal was exposed to the shock of corruption in the defense deal. Special CBI Judge Virender Bhat has found Jaya Jaitley and his former aides in the party Gopal Pacherwal and Major General SP Murgai guilty of corruption and criminal conspiracy.

In a judgment pronounced on 21 July by the court, Jaitley illegally took two lakh rupees from Matthew Samuel, a representative of the suspect company Westend International, while Murgai took 20 thousand rupees. Surendra Kumar Surekha was a party to the criminal conspiracy case along with the three accused, but Surekha later became a government witness. The court convicted the three accused Jaya Jaitley, Gopal Pacherwal and SP Murgai under criminal conspiracy Section-120B of the IPC and Section-9 of the Anti-Corruption Act (taking bribes to use private influence on public servants). The court has decided on 29 July to debate the sentence.

The court stated that the evidence provided by the prosecution proves that Surekha and Murgai, in a meeting held in the hotel room on December 25, 2000, issued letters to Samuel asking the Ministry of Defense to evaluate the product manufactured by his company. Apart from this, he also arranged his meeting with Jaya Jaitley so that political protection can be obtained.
