Covid Updates: India reports 16,764 new cases, Omicron surges to 1,270

New Delhi: India reported 16,764 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 days on Friday, an increase for the third day, bringing the country's total coronavirus cases to 34,838,804.

According to the Union health ministry, the overall number of cases of the Omicron type of Covid-19 has risen to 1,270, with Maharashtra and Delhi reporting 450 and 320 instances respectively.

According to the health ministry, the active caseload in the country is 91,361, accounting for 0.26 percent of all cases. With this, the country's COVID-19 tally has climbed to 34,838,804, while the mortality toll has risen to 4,81,080, with 220 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

In the last 24 hours, 7,585 patients have recovered, bringing the overall number of recoveries to 3,42,66,363.  The country's recovery rate is currently at 98.36 percent.

The country's weekly positivity rate is 0.89 percent, which has remained below 1% for the past 47 days. The daily positivity rate is 1.34 percent, which has been below 2% for the past 88 days.  So far, the government has done 67.78 crore COVID-19 tests.

A statewide immunisation programme in India has so far resulted in the administration of 144.54 crore vaccinations.
