Defence Minister Rajnath Singh pays homage to Galwan heroes

SRINAGAR: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh paid tribute to the Indian Army soldiers who died in the Galwan Valley encounter two years ago on Thursday in Srinagar.

Singh, who is in Jammu and Kashmir for a two-day visit, took to Twitter to say, "On June 15-16, 2020, we will remember the Galwan warriors who fought heroically for the country's honour and laid down their lives. Their valour, bravery, and supreme sacrifice will be remembered forever. Those Bravehearts have my respect."

On June 15, 2020, violent combat between Indian and Chinese troops broke out in the Galwan Valley for the first time in 45 years, resulting in losses on both sides and signalling a new sour turn in Sino-Indian relations. The violent skirmishes, which primarily occurred in and around Ladakh's Galwan Valley and Pangong Lake, killed lives on both sides and worsened bilateral relations.

Despite the fact that it has been two years since the worst conflict between Indian and Chinese troops in 45 years in Ladakh's Galwan Valley, the two countries are still in discussions to disengage along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). However, there is little sign of a quick resolution to the deadlock.

Since the Galwan hostilities, the Indian Army and the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) have undertaken 14 rounds of discussions, with one more scheduled before June 15, 2020, to settle the standoff, although no clear solution has yet been reached.

In the meantime, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh arrived in Srinagar today for a two-day visit. During his visit, he will be visiting forward areas and interacting with troops. He will also be at Jammu tomorrow for the 200th anniversary of Maharaja Gulab Singh's 'Rajyabhishek Ceremony.'
