New Delhi: The Delhi High Court is set to hear Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's plea on July 8, requesting additional meetings with his lawyers during his judicial custody. The petition, scheduled before Justice Neena Bansal Krishna, seeks directions for two extra meetings through video conferencing to discuss ongoing litigations, arguing that this is crucial for his right to a fair trial.
Kejriwal's plea was recently dismissed by the trial court, which noted that he is involved in approximately 30 litigations nationwide. The court also highlighted that Kejriwal’s lawyer had informed that he was arrested in an additional case by the CBI after the initial application was filed. Furthermore, the trial court referenced an order dated February 22, 2024, which allowed co-accused Sanjay Singh additional legal meetings. However, the trial court found no new grounds to overturn its previous order dated April 10, 2024.
In a separate matter, the Rouse Avenue Court of Delhi denied Kejriwal's plea to have his wife present during consultations with the medical board. The court reasoned that the prison rules do not permit such exceptions unless the prisoner is admitted to a hospital outside the jail, as stipulated in Rule 479 (C) of the Delhi Prison Rules, 2018. The court acknowledged that Kejriwal, currently in Tihar Jail, is not hospitalized. However, it allowed Kejriwal’s wife to independently consult with the medical board or doctors about the preparation of his medically prescribed diet if permitted under hospital rules. The court also ordered the jail authorities to provide Kejriwal's medical records to his wife.
Kejriwal’s petition is related to the excise policy money laundering case. In this case, the ED and the CBI have alleged irregularities in modifying the excise policy, including undue favors to license holders, waiver or reduction of license fees, and extension of the L-1 license without proper approval.
