INX Media case: Court rejects Sibal's plea, Chidambaram sent to Tihar Jail

New Delhi: Former Finance Minister and veteran Congress leader P Chidambaram has been sent to judicial custody in Tihar Jail till 19 September in INX Media case. The CBI's application to send him to jail has been approved by the Rouse Avenue Court. The CBI had applied to send Chidambaram to jail after 14 days of custody.

Kapil Sibal, counsel for P Chidambaram, appealed to the court that Chidambaram be kept in the custody of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) but not sent to judicial custody. To this Tushar Mehta said that there are only two options, first police custody, and second judicial custody. The court rejected Sibal's application and sent P Chidambaram to Tihar Jail till 19 September.

Earlier, in the Aircel Maxis case, former finance minister and veteran Congress leader P Chidambaram and his son Karti Chidambaram have been granted anticipatory bail. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) special court on Thursday said that Chidambaram and Karti should be released immediately on a personal bond of Rs 1 lakh in the event of arrest. However, the court has also asked Chidambaram and Karti not to tamper with witnesses and evidence and to cooperate in the investigation.
