Salem Shocker- Tamil Nadu: In a heartbreaking turn of events, A woman died after she jumped in front of a speeding bus in Tamil Nadu’s Salem district, allegedly to get compensation that she wanted to use to pay fees for her son’s college studies. The deceased, identified as Papathy (46), was a resident of Salem and worked as a sanitary worker in the Collector's office. Stricken by the loss of her husband, she left behind a daughter and a son. On the morning of June 28, tragedy struck as a speeding bus struck her down at Second Agraharam Street in Salem. The local authorities promptly registered a case and launched an investigation into the incident. During their examination of the CCTV footage, the police made a startling discovery. It was revealed that prior to the fatal accident, Papathy had made an earlier attempt to jump in front of a moving bus but had fallen after being hit by a two-wheeler. Minutes later, she repeated the desperate act when another bus approached. The entire heart-wrenching sequence was captured on camera. Upon conducting inquiries with Papathy's family, relatives, and neighbors, the police uncovered the distressing circumstances behind her actions. Papathy had been tirelessly seeking a loan of Rs 45,000 to cover her son's college fees, but her efforts proved futile. Suffering from depression, she had heard about the government's compensation policy for accidents involving sanitation workers, and this misguided information pushed her to the edge. While her daughter has already completed her college studies, her son is currently enrolled as an undergraduate at a private institution, exacerbating Papathy's financial burden and desperation. This tragic incident serves as a somber reminder of the challenges faced by individuals in pursuit of educational opportunities and highlights the need for better support systems to alleviate the financial strain on families.
