EAM Jaishankar meets his Filipino counterpart in Manila

Manila:  S. Jaishankar, India's External Affairs Minister, met with his Filipino counterpart Teddy Locsin Jr. in Manila on Monday and discussed a range of issues. This is Jaishankar's first trip to the Philippines as External Affairs Minister, and it follows the Quadrilateral Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Melbourne over the weekend.

The Minister took to Twitter to say that he held "We are starting a new phase of our partnership," says Locsin Jr., "and we have had some fruitful discussions." Its foundation is based on the mutuality of national security and development goals "..

The Philippines' Department of Foreign Affairs said on Twitter before of the meeting that the two officials "would discuss health and security, as well as other regional and global concerns of mutual relevance, especially as governments continue to interact post-Covid."

On November 26, 1949, India and the Philippines formally established diplomatic ties, shortly after both countries attained independence (Philippines in 1946 and India in 1947).

The year 2019 marks the 70th anniversary of the two countries' diplomatic relations. President Ram Nath Kovind paid a state visit to the Philippines to commemorate the occasion. During his visit, Kovind met with Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte and held talks with the delegation.
