Election commission defers Rajya Sabha elections on these seats due to coronavirus

In view of the 21-day lockdown in the country, the Election Commission has postponed the election to 18 seats in Rajya Sabha. The Election Commission has taken this decision in view of the conditions arising from the coronavirus. The Commission said that it is postponing this election using its constitutional powers. While deferring the Rajya Sabha election to be held on March 26 last month, the commission said that a decision would be taken after reviewing the situation in view of the threat posed by the coronavirus. The new date for the election will be announced later.

In the Rajya Sabha seats which have been postponed amidst virus prevention, 17 members from six states are retiring on April 9, while one member of Meghalaya is retiring on April 12. These 18 seats are from Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Manipur, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Meghalaya. In a statement, the commission said that in the election process, there is essentially participation of polling officers, agents of political parties, assistant officers and members of the concerned assembly.

For your information, let us tell you that these people also gather at one place on election day. This can pose a threat to public safety and may cause a crisis for public health. In the statement, the commission said that it has reviewed the public health emergency and reviewed the feasibility of completing the voting process. The Commission considers keeping in mind all the facts and circumstances that it is not possible to continue the election process in the current environment to avoid public safety and health hazards.
