Engineers are the future of every country. India is one of the major engineering countries in the world, producing more than 15 lakhs (1,500,000) engineering graduates every year. Engineer Day is celebrated on September 15 every year. This year marks the 161st birth anniversary of M Visvesvaraya who was born on September 15, 1861, in the Muddenahalli village of Karnataka. He completed his school education in his hometown and later went to study Bachelor of Arts (BA) from the University of Madras. However, he changed his career path after graduating and pursued civil engineering at the College of Science in Pune. Accomplishments In 1903, Sir M Visvesvaraya designed and patented automatic barrier water floodgates. Also called Block System, it had automated doors that close in the event of water overflow. It was first installed at the Khadakvasla reservoir in Pune. In 1917, he established the Government Engineering College, now known as Bengaluru's University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering. Honors and Awards The Indian government declared Sir M Visvesvaraya's birth anniversary as Engineers' Day in 1968. Since then, this day is celebrated to honour and acknowledge all engineers who have contributed and still do so to build a modern and developed India. Sir M Visvesvaraya received the Bharat Ratna in 1955 and was also conferred the British knighthood. He served as Diwan of Mysore from 1912 to 1918. Visvesvaraya was not just a great civil engineer but also served as the 19th Diwan of Mysore from 1912 to 1919. While serving as the Diwan of Mysore, in 1915 he was awarded ‘Knight’ as a commander of the British Indian Empire by King George V.
