There is not one moment where we do not use our eyes; Right from the time we wake up in the morning, till we turn of the lights. We take our eyes for granted. Leaving the house without sunglasses People mostly wear sunglasses only during summer as the sun is burning hot. But UV rays reach the ground during winter too. UV light can cause melanomas and carcinomas on the eyelids, and UV exposure is known to increase your risk of issues like cataracts and macular degeneration. Rubbing the eyes If dust particles or a stray eyelash goes into your eyes, you tend to rub your eyes till its gone. You aren’t going to turn blind if you do this; but if you rub your eyes more often, you should stop right away. Rubbing your eyes often increases your chances of keratoconus, wherein the cornea becomes thin and pointy, distorting your vision. Use water instead to flush out irritants. Staring at electronic devices We live in a digital world of blue light, which is emitted by laptops, computers, smartphones, tablets and televisions. This is as good as the UV rays. Take a 20-second break and focus on something at least 20 feet away. This will help reduce the strain and prevent headaches. Applying Eyeliner on the waterline This is quite risky, as the eyeliner mixes with tears. If you’re wearing lenses, they get coated with makeup particles which can deprive the eyes of oxygen; And even if you’re not wearing contacts, those makeup particles could be carrying germs that cause infections. We depend on our vision more than any of our other senses. Give some thought to how you are caring for your vision, and take the necessary steps to make changes so your eyes can be protected.
