New Delhi: Recently, union home minister Amit Shah's statement on the Hindi language evoked sharp reactions in the southern states. Because of this, political turmoil had arisen. Meanwhile, the Home Ministry has started promoting the use of Hindi in their government functioning bypassing the response of states. All the files and their notes and statements are being released by the Ministry in Hindi. All the statements issued by the Ministry are also being prepared in the first Hindi itself. The official language department has started asking the officials to send e-mails to Hindi as well. Home Minister Amit Shah had on Thursday suggested that people from different states should speak to each other in Hindi and not English. The Home Ministry, in the 37th meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on Official Language, had quoted Amit Shah as saying, "PM Narendra Modi has decided that the way to run the government is the official language, and this will definitely increase the importance of Hindi." The time has come to make the official language an important part of the unity of the country. When citizens of other language-speaking states interact with each other, it should be in the language of India. However, Amit Shah made it clear that Hindi should be accepted as an alternative to English and not local language. He also suggested that Hindi should be made more flexible by accepting words from other local languages. Shah is the chairman of the Official Language Committee, and B Mahtab of the BJD is its vice-chairman.
