In Beijing, Jaishankar will hold discussions with Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi on various aspects of bilateral relations besides regional and global issues. Modi and Xi held bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Bishkek, capital of Kyrgyzstan, last month. This was the first meeting between the two leaders after Modi returned to power after the BJP's massive victory in the general elections in May.

Modi described the meeting as "extremely successful". At the informal summit, the two leaders are expected to focus on further broadening India-China relations, which will include enhancing people-to-people contacts and expanding cooperation in trade and investment. The first informal summit between the two leaders was held in the Chinese city of Wuhan in April following heavier tensions in bilateral relations following a 73-day standoff between the armies of the two countries at Doklam in the border Sikkim sector.
