New Delhi: Former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student leader Umar Khalid was arrested on Sunday late night by Delhi police. The police were looking for Umar Khalid in connection with the deadly riots that erupted in Delhi last year. The police had filed a case against Umar under the Unlawful Activities (Prohibition) Act (UAPA) in another riot-related case.
The Special Branch of Delhi Police had also questioned Umar in connection with the alleged conspiracy behind the riots. The police had also seized Umar Khalid's mobile phone. Communal riots erupted in northeast Delhi on February 24 following violence between opponents and supporters of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), in which at least 53 people lost their lives, while nearly 200 were injured.
The Delhi Police has recently filed a charge sheet against several major leaders in the case, including the former Communist Party of India (Marxist) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury. After his name surfaced in the charge sheet, Sitaram Yechury also attacked the Modi government. He had said that the central government has ordered the Delhi police to cordon off the opposition in any way.
