New Delhi: Lieutenant General Anil Chauhan has taken over as India's second Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). He has taken charge of this big post on Friday i.e. today (September 30). After the CDS is made, Chauhan has a target of synergy among the three wings of the armed forces and the creation of an ambitious theatre command, so that the country's forces can be prepared to deal with future security challenges. General Chauhan has been the chief of the Army's Eastern Command. More than nine months after the death of India's first CDS General Bipin Rawat in a helicopter crash in Tamil Nadu, General Chauhan has taken the responsibility of the senior-most military commander. After taking office, General Chauhan said that "I will try to live up to the expectations of the three services and try my best to overcome whatever security challenges and difficulties are there.'' General Chauhan is considered an expert on China and his appointment to the top post comes at a time when there is a border standoff between Indian and Chinese troops in eastern Ladakh. 61-year-old Lt Gen Chauhan, a highly experienced and ornate officer of the Indian Army, will also serve as secretary of the Department of Military Affairs, Ministry of Defence.
