German hospital fire leaves 4 injured; suspect is detained

Berlin: A hospital fire that occurred over the weekend in Berlin seriously injured four people, including one patient who was critically injured, according to authorities on Monday. A man was taken into custody in relation to the fire.

The German capital's Klinikum am Urban's third-floor fire was put out early on Monday, according to the fire department. A patient whose life was in danger after getting stuck in an elevator was one of three patients and a nurse who suffered serious injuries.

The building's 40 occupants were evacuated as smoke filled it. Although it wasn't immediately clear how they caught fire, firefighters claimed the blaze appeared to have started with burning beds in a hallway, according to German news agency dpa. A man was detained, according to the police, and arson couldn't be ruled out.
