German household consumption declines 3 pc in 2020 due to Covid

Berlin: Due to Covid, German household consumption fall in 2020. According to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the Covid-19 pandemic "markedly harmed" private spending in Germany in 2020, lowering monthly consumption expenditure by 3 percent.

According to statistics, Xinhua news agency reported, citing Destatis, the average monthly household consumption in Germany has dropped to little over 2,500 euros ($2,810). The most significant decrease in spending was in food and lodging services, which fell by 35 percent from the previous year. The second-largest decrease was in education, with Germans spending 29 percent less.

Due to the Covid-19 restrictions, German customers have placed a greater emphasis on their homes, purchasing more interior furnishings, household equipment, and home textiles, according to Destatis. According to Destatis, homeowners spent an average of 160 euros per month on home products last year, up 13 percent from 2019 (the year before the epidemic).
