Google brings 'About this result' feature in 9 Indian languages

NEW DELHI:  Google announced on Friday that its "About this result" feature will be available globally, including in nine Indian languages, to help people all over the world evaluate information and understand where it's coming from as search trends for online misinformation in India reach an all-time high in 2023.

The three dots will now appear next to the majority of results on Google Search, regardless of the language you're searching in. "Tapping those three dots gives you a way to learn more about where the information you're seeing is coming from and how our systems determined that it might be useful for your query," Google wrote in a blog post.

Users will be better able to choose the websites they would like to visit and the search results that will be most beneficial to them as a result of this.

Google has collaborated with media literacy specialists to create training to assist participants in better understanding how to recognise misinformation as a means of combating it.

The company collaborated in India with FactShala, a multi-stakeholder network for media literacy that is administered by over 250 journalists and other specialists and offers courses and programmes in more than 15 Indian languages.

According to the business, FactShala is launching an incubator programme this year to support media and community organisations in experimenting with fresh and inventive formats to promote media literacy. In addition, FactShala will run a campaign for young people and first-time voters in partnership with 500 colleges.

Since 2016, they have trained over 60,000 journalists and media students in India on the abilities needed to recognise and disprove internet misinformation through the GNI India Training Network and Google's Teaching Fellows.

More than 1,200 workshops delivered in over 15 languages have benefited more than 1,450 newsrooms and 1,200 colleges.

The internet giant also claimed that it established the GNI Fact Check Academy in 2022 to support newsrooms in developing their capacity to check false claims with facts and to combat disinformation connected to climate change.

YouTube also debuted "Press Pause" at the end of 2022 as an initiative to assist users in identifying and assessing false information in India.
