Patna: The proposal to amend the prohibition law has received the approval of the state cabinet in Bihar. After the state cabinet approved the proposal to amend the prohibition law, it is now clear that in view of the current budget session of the Bihar Assembly, the bill to amend the prohibition law will be brought to both the houses of the legislature for approval.

According to reports received from sources, provisions have been made in the new format to make the prohibition law more stringent. The proposal to amend the Prohibition Act seeks to bring the sale of liquor under the category of organised offences under this law and also provides for confiscation of the property of traders and smugglers involved in the liquor trade.

In the same new amendment, any substance used to make alcohol will now be brought under the category of narcotics under the prohibition law. As per the proposed amendment to the Prohibition Act, the trial of persons caught drinking alcohol will be conducted by officers of the rank of Executive Magistrate or above. According to sources, in the past, the alcohol prohibition department had announced that if a person is caught drinking alcohol and he gives information about where he got the liquor from or which smuggler provided him with the liquor and if such liquor smugglers or liquor mafia are caught in the raid, then that person will not be sent to jail.
