Govt Mandates Registration for Laptop, Computer Imports Starting November 1, 2023

New Delhi: In a significant move, the Indian government has placed laptops, computers, and tablets into the restricted category effective November 1, 2023. Under the newly introduced regulations, the import of laptops, tablets, and personal computers will require mandatory registration, marking a substantial shift in the nation's import policies.

Companies engaged in importing laptops and tablets will now be required to undergo a registration process. This initiative by the government aims to systematically gather data on electronic devices entering India.

For businesses looking to import laptops and computers, the government will scrutinize their requests, ensuring that the products originate from trusted and reliable sources.

Santosh Kumar Sarangi, the Director General of Foreign Trade, has emphasized that electronic products will now fall under the purview of the Import Management System. This process will be exclusively conducted online, streamlining the import procedures. Sarangi further articulated that the introduction of this new licensing system by the government primarily serves the purpose of monitoring electronic product imports, ensuring that they originate from credible sources within the country.

The Director General of Foreign Trade has officially confirmed that this new licensing system will be put into effect without delay, commencing on November 1, 2023.

This comprehensive licensing system applies to a wide range of electronic products, including laptops, personal computers, large mainframe computers, microcomputers, and certain data processing machines.
