Grain export deal: Guterres welcomes 1st sailing of vessel from Odesa

UNITED NATIONS: Antonio Guterres, the secretary-general of the United Nations (UN), has greeted the first commercial ship departing from Odessa, Ukraine, as part of the Black Sea Grain Initiative, which was negotiated by the UN and Turkey.

The cargo ship loaded with over 26,000 tons of corn should arrive at the inspection location in Turkish territorial waters on Tuesday. After inspection, it will proceed to its final destination in Tripoli, Lebanon, Guterres said..

"The Merchant Vessel Razoni is carrying food and hope, two commodities that are in short supply. Providing hope to the millions of people who depend on the efficient operation of Ukraine's ports to provide for their families, "He informed the press.

The Black Sea Grain Initiative's first tangible outcome is the ship's departure. The Joint Coordination Center, which was established last week in Istanbul under UN supervision and included representatives from Ukraine, Russia, and Turkey, achieved a great deal,  Guterres said.

The UN-sponsored Black Sea Grain Initiative, which was agreed on July 22 by Russia, Ukraine, and Turkey with Turkey, would permit large exports of food and fertiliser from three important Black Sea ports in Ukraine: Odesa, Chernomorsk, and Yuzhny.

In response to worries about food shortages brought on by the protracted situation in Ukraine, the agreement aims to assure the safe passage for ships transporting grain to global markets.

"What we saw in Odessa today is a crucial starting point. It must be the first of many commercial vessels that will bring stability and relief to the world's food markets "Guterres said.  "It will bring relief and stability to global food markets and assist address the global food crisis," he said. "It will go hand in hand with the agreed facilitation of the unhindered entry of Russian food goods and fertilisers to international markets."
