New Delhi: Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi, Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) operations commander was on Friday convicted and sentenced for 15 years by a Pakistani court in a terror-financing case. The US has welcomed the conviction of Lakhvi on terror financing charges but called for action against him for his alleged role in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. The US state department’s Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs said on Twitter, “We are encouraged by the recent conviction of Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi. However, his crimes go far beyond financing terrorism." It further added, “Pakistan should further hold him accountable for his involvement in terrorist attacks, including Mumbai attacks." India had termed the conviction as a “farcical” action made with an eye on the Financial Action Task Force (FATF). In an official statement, MEA said, “UN proscribed entities and designated terrorists act as proxies for Pakistani establishment to fulfil its anti-India agenda. It’s for the international community to hold Pakistan to account and ensure that it takes credible action against terror groups, terror infrastructure and terrorists."Lakhvi was arrested soon after the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks in November 2008 when 10 heavily-armed Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists from Pakistan created mayhem in the city, killing 166 people and injuring over 300 others.
