Home Ministry issues alert over Prophet Mohammad controversy

New Delhi: The Union Home Ministry has asked the police of all states and Union Territories to remain alert over the riots being carried out across the country in the name of alleged insult to Prophet Muhammad by former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma. The ministry said they could be targeted during the violence. On Friday (June 10, 2022), there was violence in many cities of the country in the name of protests. During this time, the rioters attacked the police. During this period, many serious and worrisome incidents of vandalism, arson and stone-pelting came to light.

According to a senior ministry official, the policemen deployed to maintain law and order have been asked to remain in proper riot gear. There can be a deliberate attempt to disturb the peace and order in the country. He said that along with the police, paramilitary forces also need to be ready to fight if needed. The official also said that the police have been asked to keep a close watch on people who make inflammatory speeches. Besides, the state police have been asked to identify those who made violent and inflammatory statements in their speeches and those who posted it live so that action can be taken against them.

The Home Ministry has asked all states to take necessary steps, keep a watch on borders and identify sensitive areas. The directions have been issued in the wake of violence and attacks on police in several states, including Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand. In the name of the alleged insult of the Prophet, incidents of violence and arson are being carried out all over the country. On Friday (June 10, 2022), several policemen were injured in the violence that followed the Jumei prayers. During this time, poisonous statements were made on media and social media inciting violence along with damaging public properties. The police had to resort to lathi-charge to control the mob. Tear gas shells were fired at many places. In Jharkhand, two people have lost their lives in firing after an attack on police.
