Huawei to introduce a new Kirin processor

As you already know, the claims that Huawei relies entirely on itself in the production of processors for its smartphones have proven to be untrue. Yes, its “daughter” HiSilicon developed some of the important components for the chipsets themselves, but this was done using software developed by ARM Holdings, which is engaged in the development of processors. The other day, this company broke off ties with Huawei, but it turned out that Huawei managed to accumulate an annual stock of components, and, in the opinion of Huawei Central, it will introduce a new chipset today.

No, it will not be the new Kirin 985 processor, which is expected to be released later this year and will be installed in the Huawei Mate 30. This processor will replace the Kirin 980, which is currently used in the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, Huawei P30 and P30 Pro. Also, this chipset is installed inside the foldable smartphone Huawei Mate X. Instead, the new processor from HiSilicon, which is expected to be announced tomorrow, will be called Kirin 720 and will be the successor to the mid-level chip Kirin 710, which is installed in Huawei P30 Lite.

According to rumors, Kirin 720 will be produced by TSMC, a foundry that produces all Kirin processors and Balong modem chips for HiSilicon, and will use a 10 nm process technology. This is one generation older than the current 7 nm processors. The smaller the node size, the greater the number of transistors that can fit inside the chip, which makes it more powerful and more energy efficient.

What is special about the new processor?

The currently available Kirin 710 is built using a 12-nm process technology and is equipped with four ARM Cortex-A73 cores operating at a clock frequency of 2.2 GHz. They are used to solve complex problems. Another four ARM Cortex-A53 cores operate at 1.7 GHz and are used for less energy-intensive tasks and general services. The graphics processing unit (GPU) - ARM Mali G51 MP4. It is expected that Kirin 720 will have an improved graphics processor and NPU. The latter is an abbreviation of the Neural Processing Unit and is used for the functions of artificial intelligence and machine learning.
