Kochi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert over heavy rains in four districts of Kerala - Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, and Idukki. These districts are said to receive heavy rain today and on August 11. Heavy to heavy rain is expected at one or two places in the state on August 7 and August 11. It may rain at one or two places on August 8 and August 10. The southwest monsoon has been very active in the state and most places are receiving heavy rainfall. In the last 24 hours, the Kottayam district has recorded more than 12 cm of rain. Alappuzha and Mavelickara have recorded 11-11 cm rainfall. Cherthala increased by 10 cm and parts of Ernakulam by more than eight cm. Wind speed in the southeast Arabian Sea is estimated to reach 40-50 kmph. IMD said fishermen are advised not to go to sea during this period. A yellow rain alert has been issued for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, and Kasargod districts. Senior meteorologist PK Saha of Bhopal Centre in IMD had predicted rain or thundershowers at most places in the districts of nine divisions of the state including Jabalpur and Bhopal. He explained that this weather forecast was valid till Saturday morning. Saha said there is a low-pressure area in the central part of the northern part of the state.
