New Delhi: The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Water Resources has suggested to the government that the government should negotiate the Indus Water Agreement with Pakistan. The 1960 agreement was based on the division of water between the two countries and does not include topics such as climate change, global temperature, environmental impact. Now, these issues are very important and they should also be brought under discussion.

In a report of the Standing Committee on Water Resources of Parliament tabled in the Lok Sabha, the Committee said that the treaty has stood the test of time. The committee says that the treaty was framed in 1960 in accordance with the information and technology of the agreement at that time. At that time, the two countries had a view to the construction of dams, canals, river management through the generation of power energy and use of water.

The Committee said that at present, climate change, global temperature, assessment of environmental impact, etc. Keeping this in view, the Committee requests the Government of India to take diplomatic measures to renegotiate the Water Treaty with Pakistan. The Committee has recommended that as per the provisions of the Treaty, the feasibility of the provisions of the Indus Water Treaty should be examined for maximum utilization of irrigation and electrical energy capacity from western rivers including storage of water and full utilization of water.
